Specialist Provision

We are very pleased to have our Special Provision at Prince William School. The Provision will specialise in supporting children and young people with Social, Emotional and/or Mental Health (SEMH), with Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA) and anxiety.

We will work closely with the NHS and other external partners (eg Speech and Language, Educational Psychology and Occupational Health) both locally and nationally to ensure that we are well placed to serve our community and help our young people achieve.

The Special Provision will be an extension of the offer provided by East Midlands Academy Trust and will support our young people to flourish through a clinically led educational offer and admissions will be through the County Admissions Process (see below for more information).

What is our Therapeutic Informed Curriculum Offer?

This will be bespoke to the young person based on the National Curriculum and Pathway to Adulthood to ensure that opportunities for post-16 do not diminish. This can be mapped out as shown below:

How many young people will be in our Special Provision?

Our Special Provision will be able to support up to 48 young people. They will be admitted as part of different groups from September 2025.

  • Cohort 1 - the first 5 months will be up to 5 pupils.
  • Cohort 2 - by July 2026 will be up to 12 pupils.
  • Cohort 3 - by July 2027 up to 33 pupils.
  • Cohort 4 - by July 2028 up to 48 pupils.

We are currently admitting Cohort 1.

How can a child get a place?

To be considered for admission, prospective pupils must be:

  • Between the ages of 11 and 16 years old.
  • Have an EHCP upon entry to the Special Provision.
  • Have been diagnosed with anxiety or are on the pathway to diagnosis and remain socially and emotionally vulnerable, withdrawn, isolated and find it challenging to attend school.
  • Are not in attendance at a school currently due to emotionally based school avoidance rationale.
  • Have a diagnosis of ASD or are on the pathway to diagnosis and require a smaller setting due to related anxieties.
  • Willing to actively engage with clinical practitioners and who may be already working with mental health services.

Prospective pupils must not have a history of disruptive, aggressive or unsafe behaviours.

Consultation process

Prospective pupils will be referred to the EMAT inclusion team by the local authority only. The Special Admissions Panel will meet and explore the needs of the child and if needs can be met.

What will happen if a child is leaving the Special Provision?

In most cases, our pupils will leave the Special Provision when they have made strong progress towards their targets and demonstrated a readiness to learn and be a part of a mainstream community.

When we are at that stage:

  • There will be an annual review to confirm this and a suitable mainstream placement will be found by the Local Authority.
  • All decisions will be made by all partners.

When a new and suitable mainstream provision has been identified that can meet the young person’s needs they will work with the Special Provision to:

  • Put in place reasonable adjustments such as a bespoke curriculum pathway.
  • Support for Parents/Carers at an agreed point into the placement.

The place in the Special Provision is reviewed on an ongoing basis in line with statutory and best practice requirements.
