Physical Education

Intent

Our mission is to stimulate a lifelong love of learning and of sport by creating an environment in which students will learn to lead a healthy and active lifestyle which will benefit them as they move through life.

Introduction

The Physical Education Department develops self-esteem, dignity, health/fitness, resilience and respect through participation not only in lessons but as representatives and ambassadors of the school. Physical Education is crucial to pupil development; it can contribute to spiritual, moral, cultural and most importantly physical development.

At Prince William School you will have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of sporting activities but most importantly you will learn to lead a healthy and active lifestyle which will benefit you as you move through life.

The Physical Education Department offers good facilities. In addition to large fields consisting of two football and one rugby pitch, there is a well-equipped Sports Hall, a full sized astro-turf and 4 outdoor netball courts. The changing rooms, with showers and heated floor, house a designated PE classroom as well as a fully equipped fitness suite. Opportunities exist for students to enjoy a range of sporting activities throughout the curriculum. There is a strong fixture-list for Rugby, Hockey, Netball, Football, Rounders and Cricket. Many students also participate in other sports such as Athletics, Rowing, Gymnastics, Tennis, Badminton and much more.

    Example of skill progression

  • Key Stage 4

Core PE lessons (two per week) continue to provide students with opportunities to develop a life-long love of sport and a knowledge of healthy lifestyles and fitness.  A wide variety of sports are offered and students are able to chose which ones to pursue, the course very similar to those at Key Stage 3 but with more of an option for the students on what they complete.

At Key Stage 4 students can take BTEC PE as on option block which will give them an extra 5 lessons a fortnight as well as their standard 2 core PE lessons.  These will be a mix between practical and theory based lessons. As part of the BTEC students will be regularly participating or undertaking a role in two sports of their choice. Students will develop independence to their learning by consolidating classroom work through annotation of notes and summarising key points. Students will engage in classroom discussion developing and applying their knowledge. The course requires the students to complete areas of coursework both practically and theoretically, these will be continually assessed throughout the year, they will be required to submit the coursework for corrections and then keep to all deadline dates. There are three mandatory units, one of which is an online exam, and one optional unit.

  • Careers and progression
    Qualification pathways

The PE department has responded to student requirements and changed the offer of GCSE and A level to BTECs.

The L2 BTEC offered at KS4 prepares students perfectly for the Level 3 BTEC offered at KS5, which in turn prepares students for further study at degree or BTEC Higher National or employment in the sport and active leisure sector.

    Example of successful progressions

Three students from Year 13 progressed to higher education/careers in sports related area in 2019.

  • Extra Curricular

An extensive extra-Curricular programme takes place at the school with activities on most lunchtimes and after school as well as the after school fixtures. Coaches from outside of school come in and run clubs such as fencing and the football Academies from Norwich and Peterborough.

On top of the sports offered by the PE Department there are many opportunities to take part in Leadership throughout the years. The school prides itself on the reputation it has created throughout the district for the quality of its young leaders helping out with Primary Festivals and events across the partnership. Leadership comes in two forms, general leadership carried out by Yr7-11 and the Sports Leaders/Higher Sports Leaders Award.
